Mother's Atheist Rant for You Sunday Reading Pleasure ...

My brain seems to be on overload at the moment. I sat down here and starting writing a blog post about what I have been up to this week, and the whys behind it. But I can't stay focused on it because I have too many other issues racing around in my head that apparently need to be let out. So here goes:

Mother is absolutely sick and tired of all the fucking religious hypocrites on the internet, and in real life! I have no need, want, or desire for religion of any kind. I don't really have an issue with that fact that other people do, that is their life choice and if they would keep it as such we could all get along just fine. I don't care what someone wants to believe, and that is the point. I DO NOT CARE! My problem is that so many of these religious people (and yes, it is mostly Christians, sorry but that is a fact) who make a point of trying to shove their religion down other peoples throats. I live in the United States of America, this is not a “Christian Nation” - it IS a “Melting Pot Nation” where ALL faiths and non-faiths are supposed to try to coexist in harmony. Yeah, I know, good luck with that.

My point is your religion belongs in your homes and your churches and your lives, NOT mine. I don't go to churches and extol the virtues of Science and Logic, and I have never met an Atheist who did. Why in the world do religious people feel it is necessary for them to go to places explicitly designated for non-believers and try to take over?!? I am just sick and fucking tired of all of it! Do not go to an Atheist Facebook page and complain that all of their posts are anti-religion. DUH! What the fuck did you think they were going to be?

In the past five years I have watched two Yahoo groups in my local community that were started specifically for Atheist and NON-religious Home-Schooling Families get taken over by the religious folks in our area to the point where there is NOTHING but religious propaganda and “Glory be to God”: get-togethers! Just TRY to find Non-religious Home-Schooling materials anywhere in this country! Even the online program that our state uses as their “official” online learning program teaches 2nd graders that Jesus Christ was a historical figure! Seriously?!?

I am a fan of dozens of Atheist pages on Facebook, and every single one of them gets assaulted EVERY single day by dozens if not hundreds of religious people, threatening their lives, damning them to eternal hellfire and brimstone, and complaining that the Atheists are the ones waging “War on Religion”! What the fuck is wrong with these people?!? Now I am sure, to be fair, that there may be a few Atheists who post on Christian or other Religious pages trying to start shit, I have never seen it, but I wouldn't doubt it for a second. People are assholes after all, that doesn't require a religious affiliation.

I have to admit, I have an extremely difficult time understanding how any Woman living in the 21st century can be anything but a Pagan or maybe a Buddhist, but I can understand the psychological need that religion can fulfill. Everyone wants to believe that someone will love them no matter what they do, and that this short amount of time we are each given on this earth has some meaning beyond just staying alive as long as possible. Everyone wants to believe that there is more than just the day to day struggle for existence. It is comforting, and even empowering for some folks. I get that. But I do not get worshiping a God who thinks of you as a piece of property worth no more than a cow or a sheep. I do not understand worshiping someone who sees you as evil from birth, something that must be dominated and made to suffer for his own amusement. I don't get that. And, I am sorry, but if you REALLY believe the earth is only 6,000 years old, you are a moron. Nothing you can ever do or say will ever convince me otherwise.

I am not going to debate the merits of religion, my issue isn't really with the religions themselves anyway, it is with the “followers”, especially the ones who only follow the bits and pieces that serve their own interests. If Mitt Romney, or Rush Limbaugh, or the ultimate in sub-human slime – Newt Gingrich, are going to Heaven when they die, I do not understand why any self-respecting human being would want to go there with them. Please remember that according to his religion, Osama Bin Laden is also in Heaven, as is probably Hitler, and most serial killers. Sounds like one heck of a party, but NOT one I would want any part in! But that's okay, since it doesn't matter how good a person I am in this life, how much good I do, or how much love I give, since I am not a believer I won't be going there any way, right?

And people wonder why I have no interest in this nonsense. I just wonder why in the world they do.

  1. I think you nailed it. The Flying Spaghetti Monster told me so. (LOL) I think it was Ghandi who said something like, "I like your Jesus just fine, it's his followers I can't stand."

Most religions give people comfort. They don't realize that's what it's for, but because they are so comfortable, they seem to want us all to be a comfortable as they are; no matter how all the rest of us feel. "Thanks, I'm quite comfortable already," doesn't seem to get through.

To be fair, I've seen the "God fearing" attacked on the Newsvine from MSNBC (they deserve it for the most part, but some times the attacks are uncalled for.)

"People are assholes after all, that doesn't require a religious affiliation." "I have to admit, I have an extremely difficult time understanding how any Woman living in the 21st century can be anything but a Pagan or maybe a Buddhist. . . ." I believe that both the statements should be printed on t-shirts and spread liberally around the world.

    Best wishes to you.

  2. I totally agree with you. I'm not a fan of any atheist page or Christian page just because in tired of listing to the mindless debates. "if you don't love God you must love the devil bullshit. Umm nope, can't not believe in one without not believing in the other. Is always my answer.

  3. I am so with you on this topic. Sick and tired of people thinking they are above others mostly because they believe in Christ. I don't care what you believe in either just don't try to shove it down my throat. Also, the fact that you believe this is a Christian nation just further highlights your idiocy. This is a blending pot of all types of peoples and religions, and non-religions and races and creeds. It's so hard to respect you people when you clearly have no respect for anyone but yourselves. As CSN & Y put it in "Cathedral", too many people have died in the name of Christ for anyone to heed the call, too many people have lied in the name of Christ that I can't believe it all... Yes, it's like the quote from Mahatma Gandhi. "I like your Christ but I do not like your Christians. They don't act very Christ-like." I believe that's it. I keep my religious belief to myself, why can't you keep yours to yourself? Not everyone wants to be of the Christian faith. It's high time you saw that. Instead of trying to convert everyone or wasting your time talking about yourselves, how bout you go out and do some charitable work for others. That's what will help our country.
You've said it better than I could.

  4. How many wars have been started because of religious followers? If people where more spiritual and less religious it might just work out better for all of us. And yes I'm a lapsed catholic, but practicing Pagan!

  5. I totally agree with you also, although I was born and raised Catholic, I am outraged when people try to shove those beliefs, or any other beliefs, down the throats of other people.

I choke when I hear people start to expound on the country being founded on religious principles. They don't get the idea that part of that religious freedom is the freedom of not having any religion, or worshiping the Flying Spaghetti Monster, if you they so desire.

The home schooling question is interesting; I have a very negative gut reaction when I hear about anyone home schooling. Although it's definitely not something I understand anyone wanting to do, (I believe I told my son I'd rather stick needles in my eyes) I'm not that dogmatic about things in general. I have to think my attitude is due to the fact that pretty much anyone I've known who home schooled was a religious zealot. The kids seemed a bit odd and out of step with other kids their age, but I suspect that had less to do with their homeschooling, and more to do with their home lives!

I believe in a God, just not the kind of God that's worshiped by most religions. I'd say I live the same way you do, not believing in a God: doing things because you believe they are the right things to do, not to build up credit for an afterlife.

I never care if people believe in God. I do, and obviously one of us is wrong. But it's not a big deal. I figure if there isn't, I'll never know the difference when I die. And if there really is a God, then you'll all be in for a pleasant surprise. And I'm sure it would be a pleasant surprise. If God had hired religious leaders as representatives, then I'd fire them; they are giving Him a bad name!

I don't think I'd really be concerned about Jesus Christ being considered a historical figure; Ghandi is a historical figure. As long as it's in the context of a religious leader, and not as God. Huge difference in the resumes.

Some of the best people I know have no religious beliefs; people today have trouble separating religion from morality, the same way that they have a hard time separating legal from moral. When I hear people harping on homosexuality being a sin, I want to mention other everyday things that are also considered a sin in one religion or another, such as women showing flesh, or wearing jewelry. I don't notice anyone picketing Tiffany's or California Sunshine. And Catholic doctrine also says that divorce and remarriage is a sin, as well as pre-marital sex and birth control.

I think people who aren't Catholic (and most of those who are!) would be outraged if people tried to prevent them from doing these things because their religion told them it was a sin.

You know, apparently one of Christ's often repeated directives was about selling homes and goods and giving to the poor. So the next time anyone tries to shove some aspect of their religion down your throat---at least if they are christian, you might want to ask when they're planning on having that big old "everything must go" sale. You might pick up some bargains!

  6. The only interest that I have in following politically active fundamentalist Christians is that their deeply held conviction that their take on religion is the only Way translates as running school boards, stacking the Supreme Court, and paying off politicos to
enshrine their agenda into law. they are doing a fine job of it. :/

  7. I totally agree, the worst thing about a religion is usually its followers.
